Love and Mercy takes place over the course of a Christmas Eve in Palm Springs and its central characters are a one-time matinee idol turned politician, his screenwriter wife and their novelist daughter.

Baitz’ new play explores the limits of parental love and filial duty, our myth-making culture, and the claim we have on our own biography when it involves the invasion of privacy of others.

His impressive body of work includes The Substance of Fire, The Film Society (Drama Desk nominee), Three Hotels, (Drama Desk nominee) The Paris Letter, Ten Unknowns, The End of the Day A Fair Country (a nominee for the Pulitzer Prize) and his acclaimed adaptation of Hedda Gabler.  Baitz’ recent work in television has encompassed “Brothers and Sisters,” “Alias” and “The West Wing.”

Love and Mercy will be produced by Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel, who in recent seasons have introduced Tracy Letts (August: Osage County) and Neil LaBute (Reasons to be Pretty) to Broadway as well as presenting new American plays by David Mamet (November and the current Race) and August Wilson (Radio Golf).
