ABOUT THE SHOW

Chinglish

Written by David Henry Hwang | Directed by Leigh Silverman

CHINGLISH is the hilarious story of an American businessman desperate to launch a new enterprise in China. There are only three things standing in his way: He can't speak the language. He can't learn the customs. And he's falling in love with the one woman he absolutely can't have.

From the producers of August: Osage County comes CHINGLISH, a new comedy about the misadventures of miscommunication, written by Tony Award winner David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly) and directed by Leigh Silverman (From Up Here, Well).

Direct from its sold-out run at Chicago's Goodman Theatre, this funny and sexy new play, where most everything gets lost in translation, now finds its way to the Longacre Theatre.

"What a surprise"
- Cynyhia Myers, 11/20/2011
What a surprise. This was a VERY FUNNY play and much more than we expected. It is fast moving with terrific actors along with the best set design I have ever seen. We are going back in Feb. To see it again.
"Surprised how funny this was"
- David, 11/10/2011
Surprised how funny this was!! I heard he didn't set out to write a comedy, but this story is so relatable that it's hilarious. Well done! I'm going to keep spreading the good word. :) :)
"i am not usually one to pick a play over a musical but Chinglish definitely make me rethink that"
- Gianna, 10/31/2011
i am not usually one to pick a play over a musical but Chinglish definitely make me rethink that! This show was amazing! The set was flawless, the acting was superior, and the Chinese was beautiful!!! Never expected to see a play with a language such as Chinese on a Broadway stage, but it is awesome! Two thumbs way, WAY up!!!
"SO SO funny"

"I saw the show last night, and I was beyond surprised by how FUNNY the show is"
- Franklin, 10/16/2011
I saw the show last night, and I was beyond surprised by how FUNNY the show is. And it wasn't just funny. It also had a lot of moments that made you stop and think about the disconnect between cultures. All in all, a very, very enjoyable night at the theatre.
"I am so glad I went - haven't seen a comedy like this in years"
- C., 10/14/2011
I am so glad I went - haven't seen a comedy like this in years! When I was first invited to see Chinglish, I didn't really know much about it and trusted my friend's knowledge of shows to go see - well they were right! The comedy in the show is wonderful - I didn't know Hwang's writing before this show, but I'm definitely a fan. There were a few technical glitches, but even still the set was beautiful, and the performances steller. I hope the main girl gets the recognition I think she deserves!
"the comedy is definitely stands out from anything else on broadway"
- Brett, 11/01/2011
the comedy is definitely stands out from anything else on broadway. i enjoyed the show, but i would have loved to have had a moment to get a bit more 'lost in translation' myself. i felt a bit like someone was holding my hand guiding me through the story.
"I highly recommend attending"
- Mike Schulz, 10/13/2011
I highly recommend attending! First of all, I must applause the play for taking such a technical risk by incorporating English subtitles as a key player within this production. Although it was very distracting at first, the projected easily merged to become a leading role among the very talented cast. Brilliantly executed, and quite complementary to the hilarious dialogue. Secondly, the cast was absolutely stunning! The heart that Wilmes brings to his character only matched by the hilarity that is Jennifer Lim's leading role. Aside from this dynamic couple, the supporting members add wit and laugh-out-loud moments keeping the play engaging and unforgettable. At one point, I was stamping my feet and keeling over with laughter (second act). Lastly, the set was a beautiful result of simplistic genius and innovation. The only complaint that one may mention is the overwhelming music that acts as a transitional tool between set changes. Overall, the unique concept behind Chinglish results in a successful execution that is both heartwarming and hilarious.

Cultural Advice: Go See 'Chinglish'

News from: Chinglish

There's not much time left in the Broadway run of David Henry Hwang's Chinglish. I understand that a West Coast tour will happen later this year, followed perhaps by a movie.
