HAIR Celebrates it’s One Year anniversary on Broadway, March 30th!

After one Critically Acclaimed, Love-Spreading, Award-Winning year on Broadway, HAIR celebrates it’s first birthday on March 30th! HAIR won the 2009 Tony award for Best Musical Revival and has been playing to packed houses, and wowing audiences with its timeless message of peace, tolerance, and love!

This production of Hair, directed by Diane Paulus began as a sold-out run in Central Park in July of 2008. The Public Theatre produced the outdoor “Tribal love-rock musical” which also takes place in the park. HAIR quickly transferred to Broadway and on March 30th, 2009, opened at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on West 45th Street.

HAIR soon received 8 Tony nominations, eventually winning the 2009 Tony Award for Best Musical Revival. On October 11th, the cast of HAIR led more than 1400 people from the Broadway Community to  join the National Equality March  in Washington DC to support equal rights for GLBT community members. Before a crowd of 140,000, the HAIR Tribe performed “Flesh Failures (Let the Sun Shine In)” on the steps of Congress.

In November, Producers for the show announced that the entire current New York company of HAIR would be moving to London to originate a second production in the West End. A whole new Tribe took over the Al Hirschfeld theatre on March 9th. The Production now stars Kyle Riabko (Spring Awakening)  as Claude, Ace Young (Grease) as Berger, and Diana Degarmo (The Toxic Avenger, and Hairspray) as Sheila.

HAIR on Broadway celebrates its one year Anniversary on March 30th, 2010, and The London production, currently at the Gielgud Theatre, begins performances April 1st.

The single greatest thing Hair did for me was show me the true value of friendship and how truly important it is to be surrounded by people who matter to you. Hair made me realize that there were parts of me that weren’t really alive, and thanks to the show I’m constantly thriving on every ounce of life I can. Every single friend I’ve made through the show and I are planning on meeting up in central park and having a be-in type picnic and just be alive together with the people that truly affected our lives. I can’t thank Hair enough for these people and the values it provided me with. Hair changed my outlook on life and I can’t imagine where I’d be right now without it. Over the past year, I’ve been able to experience it myself and it has been some of the greatest experiences of my life, period.

    HAIR Happy Anniversary
I salute you for a Broadway Show well done!
Wishing for all of us many more show to come.
    I’m celebrating by singing Hair.
    Break a leg…

  3. Al Fitch says:

I’d celebrate by inviting my friend Tim who just digs the music of the era and perhaps we’d wear a hip hair piece in memory of our own hair now gone.

  4. Maria Diehl says:

    I saw the original . . . can’t believe so many
years have passed and now I’m wishing a
Happy Anniversary to a great Bdwy show.

  5. martha jo lowe says:

i wonder if it will still have a political impact. i saw the original in 1969

  6. Andie Cuevas says:

<333 love HAIR. I love the message they send, and how fitting it was then and how it is still so important now. I plan/planned/did celebrate Hair by spreading the love and letting the sunshine in. And of course, checking out all the pictures and videos of the festivities and the beautiful crazy party that the show is, haha.

  7. Andie Cuevas says:

Also, to Martha Jo Lowe above me, the show still has a tremendous political impact. I was so moved by HAIR that they inspired me to become more active. I impulsively went to Washington DC to March with them/the rest of the Broadway community (Broadway Impact) on October 11, 2009 at the National Equality March. It was one of the best experiences of my life and I don’t think I would have gone if it hadn’t been for all the love and inspiration from the show/cast.

  8. Stephanie R says:

We were visiting New York for the first time ever last year and were very fortunate to be able to catch a showing of Hair. The show was so moving and was truly the highlight of our trip. We listen to the soundtrack whenever we can, framed our Playbill’s and tickets, and try to remember the great messages of peace and friendship that Hair so wonderfully portrays. We loved the show so much last year that we are going on a trip to NYC again this May JUST so we can go see Hair again. We are so excited to see this new cast perform, especially since my sister is a huge Ace Young fan! Happy Anniversary, Hair!!!

  9. Kara says:

HAiR, for me has been such an enormous part of my life for the past year. Almost a year ago (wow, time has flown…) I was cast as Jeanie in a tiny production of HAiR, before I’d even seen the INCREDIBLE Broadway cast. Being a part of my own tribe changed, and continues to change my life in millions of tiny and substantial ways. It has helped me to find myself as an artist, a person, and a grateful inhabitant of this beautiful universe. Now having seen both the Aquarius and Starshine tribes, I am continually humbled by their passion, talent, and outpouring of love, and wish them all the sweetest of first anniversaries! In celebration, I will continue to practice (and share!) all of the life lessons this movement has taught me: be grateful; enjoy this moment; stand up for what is right; search for truth and beauty; and of course, spread love- because what could possibly be more important?

  10. Cherryl R. says:

I plan to take my friends to watch Hair on Broadway again, and give out “Flesh Failures (Let The Sunshine In)” to them via iTunes.

  11. Kelly Mette says:

I just bought tickets to see HAIR for the first time in April with my mother (who loves the music).

My mom has been wanting to see HAIR ever since it opened and now she finally is! We’ve been listening to the Cast Recording ever since we purchased the tickets :)

    Happy One Year Hair!!!!

  12. Hannah L says:

Hair has changed me in unimaginable ways! The first time I saw it, in June, I left the theatre in a complete daze, yet my mind was more aware then it ever had been. I bought the soundtrack and listened to nothing else- my friends called it my “hippie phase.” Since my second time seeing it in November, that “hippie phase” became who I am. Thanks to the show and the tribe, I am full of gratitude, optimism, and love love love!
Corny as it sounds, Hair helped me to realize who I really am, made me so much more happy and comfortable with myself. It made me appreciate all the little things so much more.
I also have great admiration for the tribe for their participation in the NEM!! I wasn’t able to be there, but man, you guys rocked :) many thanks to the aquarius tribe for making a difference and working towards marriage equality in the US! we’ll get there soon :)
HAPPY ANIVERSARY! i celebrated with tie-dye cookies and a Hair dance party in my room!
cant wait to see the new tribe! im sure they’re all beautiful and brilliant!
    LOVE LOVE LOVE :D

  13. Mikayla C says:

Hair is such a special show. And it’s really made me a better person. I spent Hair’s one year anniversary with my friends celebrating life, love, and letting the sun shine in :) Happy Anniversary Hair!! And hopefully you have many, many more!

  14. Lisa A says:

I plan to listen to my Hair CD 24/7 for the next few weeks. I saw the show last August, and I have yet to stop listening and singing along. I am going to greet everyone over the next few days with a cheery “let the sunshine in” and a peace symbol with my hand.

  15. Thomas Schassler says:

AHHHHH I missed the 1 year anniversary by 1 DAY!!!! i saw it on the 30th =((((… but i actually saw the show twice this month and plan to keep seeing it!!

  16. Tim E. says:

We celebrate HAIR everyday- we talk about it, text lyrics back and forth, listen to and discuss the soundtrack, wonder how London production is going, etc. And best of all: our doggie just had puppies last night, one girl and two boys: we named them Sheila, Berger, and Claude!!!
We’re planning a trip to London because we love that cast! But we’ve seen the new cast here and we’re falling in love with them as well.
HAIR has been a huge part of our lives now for the past year, and we’re so grateful for it.
And if the new puppies and mom are doing okay this afternoon, we’ll be at the show tonight again, because it’s been 2 long weeks since we last saw a performance!
    Congratulations! Much Love and Happiness!
    - Shelee, Marah, Heather & Tim

  17. Ted Goldstein says:

I plan to celebrate Hair’s One Year Anniversary by seeing for probably the 25th time!
Congratulations London & New York Casts…
    Ted

  18. Adena says:

Seeing Hair was a dream come true! As soon as I knew it was going to be on Broadway again I new I had to see it. From that night on the Hair website was the most viewed on my computer. I had the songs memorized and couldn’t wait to see the show. I went with my mother, who saw the original cast! My mother and I have been talking about the show and topics since then. It brought us closer together. The cast took us both on an amazing journey that will never be forgotten. Peace, Love, and HAIR!

  19. Alison Engesser says:

I celebrate HAIR’s first anniversary in a number of ways. First, the show’s message of peace and love which transcends the generations. Secondly, the amazing casts of this revival. I celebrate there love, energy, and dedication to the show and their craft. The original revival cast who will always have a special place in my heart. All an actor ever owes their audience is a great performance which they gave time and time again. But these incredible people came out in all kinds of weather and took the time to take pictures, sign autographs, and talk to us when we knew full well that they must have been exhausted after the show. The new cast is no different. With the same love they carry on the tradition of the original cast of this great revival. So when you ask how I celebrate this revival’s first anniversary, I say I celebrate all who are on the stage every night and I celebrate all the love, and inspiration they have given all of us! LONG LIVE HAIR!!! both here and in London’s West End!!

  20. Sonya Spurling says:

I’ve already started celebrating the anniversary by attending Wednesday, 3/31/10’s Matinee Show with my Godbrother. It was great! I heard so much about the original 1968, but couldn’t attend that one (too young)! I will be sharing the info. with my co-workers, when we return from Spring Break. You guys made my day! We will be back for more good times!
Congratulations! Peace, Love and Let the sunshine in! Sonya and Javan

  21. Louis says:

I’ve met and gotten close to so many wonderful people through the show. Going to see the Hair a lot the last year, we’ve gone from fellow fans to genuine close friends. This show has taught all of us the meaning of true, open, unconditional love and we put it into practice everyday.

So this weekend, just like how it is all the time, I plan on spending my sunshine-filled days with the people that have spent the year with me. And see the show, of course.

  22. Zoe K says:

I rocked out to both hair soundtracks (original and new) and watched the movie! Hair is the most amazing thing in the world…. as cheesy as it is, it changed me and made me a better person. PEACE LOVE HAPPINESS YAY!

  23. Elizabeth T says:

I just became interested in Hair recently after seeeing its progress on the Tony Awards this year. I finally bought the soundtrack and it is amazing! To celebrate, I would love to go see the performance this summer! The cast has so much energy and is so fresh! I would love to become part of any Hair tribe in the future. The show’s message of becoming whoever you want is so inspiring and has helped me think about how I want the world to see me.

  24. larilyn garland says:

i’d celebrate by taking my niece to the show. i am always telling her about the the good old days and seeing hair would give her glimpse into my past!

  25. Sari Stifelman says:

Hair has truly changed my life, and in honor of it’s one year, I will do what it has inspired me to do everyday of my life: to love and cherish each and every moment, and to be kind to EVERYONE, and to stand up for what I believe in. LOVE OUT LOUD

  26. Dave Baumberger says:

Live, love, peace, and make love, not war

  27. Joshua Lieder says:

I am celebrating one year of Hair on Broadway by singing “Let the Sunshine” with my new bride and an entire church as we slowly exit on September 4th, 2010 at 10:30. We cannot afford tickets to see you in NY City but hope to see the show when it comes to Providence, RI someday.
    Peace and Love everybody!
